Home Selection
What do I ask and look for in selecting a day home?
- What are the hours of care?
- Is the day home operating on a full-time, part-time, or shift worker basis?
- Does your child feel welcome and comfortable?
- Do daily plans include routine rests, snacks and play times? Does the provider plan field trips?
- Is the day home safe and spacious enough for the number of children they care for?
- Are there emergency exits for the children in the case of a fire or other emergency? Are emergency evacuations practiced regularly?
- Is there space for the children to play both inside and outside?
- Will the provider teach your child things you would teach in your own home?
- What is the provider’s process for dealing with behaviour concerns? Please note: It’s A Child’s World Family Day homes does not permit the use of corporal punishment in any form at its day homes.
- Will your child learn through painting, colouring, drawing, music, etc? Does the provider promote self-help skills among the children?
Important points of discussion with providers:
- Communication: Let your provider know if there are changes in your schedule, or contact information. Also provide two weeks notice if you intend to terminate services.
- Release of Child: Let your provider know who can pick up your child besides yourself. Providers may not release your child without your written consent.
- Medications: Providers may not administer any medication without permission of the parents. In case of an emergency the provider is authorized to take the necessary action.
- Illness: Children with fever, vomiting, frequent diarrhea, unexplained rash or any communicable disease should not be taken to the dayhome; these types of illness are often contagious.
- Activities: Agree upon the types of activities your children can participate in. For example: riding in the provider's car, outdoor supervision, etc. Again, please make Provider aware of any sensitivities to sun, allergens, bee stings, etc.
- Feeding and Eating Patterns: Providers are required to serve one meal and two snacks per day in accordance with the Canada Food Guide. Make the provider aware of any food restrictions or allergies.
Note: Please ensure your child always has an adequate breakfast before dropping them off. Hungry children can't function properly and can react with quick tempers, aggression or sleepiness.
- Clothing: Appropriate seasonal attire is required for both indoor and outdoor play. Please label clothing items to prevent mix ups.
- Toilet Training: Agree upon the amount and type of training you wish your child to receive
